The Democrats are already within two seats of control of the House, and Sens. Lincoln Chafee (R-Rhode Island), Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) and Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) have already been turned out. So how is it that Sen. George Allen (R-Virginia) looks to be one of the few swing-race Republicans standing? The son of the legendary Redskins coach and this year’s greatest national embarrassment has been in a nail-biting, pratfall-happy race against Jim Webb, with Webb closing the polling gap since this summer and early results putting the two in dead heat. At the moment, Drudge has the two within 12,000 votes (1,100,751 for Allen, 1,088,293 for Webb), and Webb closes the gap a little every time I reload the page. Tonight has been a catastrophe for my reputation as an election psychic, but here’s a prediction that looks pretty likely: Webb/Allen will be the first recount of 2006.
