Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Lakewood) announced Wednesday that she will seek election in the newly drawn 38th Congressional District in southeast Los Angeles County.

She will avoid a contest with the current representative of the area, Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Norwalk), who said Wednesday she’ll run instead in the new 32nd Congressional District in the San Gabriel Valley.

But Sanchez will get competition instead from state Sen. Ron Calderon (D-Montebello), who previously announced his plans to run for Congress in the 38th District.

Sanchez said in a statement that the new 38th District includes nearly half of the old 39th District, which she has represented since 2003. Communities include Artesia, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, La Mirada and Whittier.
