The crowded race for an open Assembly seat in the San Gabriel Valley just got more so. Matthew Lin, a surgeon and a former mayor of San Marino, has announced he’s seeking the 49th District seat that will be vacated by termed-out Assemblyman Mike Eng (D-Monterey Park). Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and Supervisor Mike Antonovich were among Lin’s supporters as he formally launched his campaign this weekend at Garfield Medical Center.
Others interested in the seat include El Monte Union High School District board member John Tran, Alhambra Councilman Luis Ayala, Montebello school board member Edwin Chau, Monterey Park Councilman Mitchell Ing and retired teacher David Siegrist. Chau has the endorsements of Eng and his wife, Rep. Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park).
In other races for the Legislature next year, candidates are touting recent endorsements from area elected officials, whose ranks they hope to join.
Businesswoman Laurette Healey, running for the new 46th Assembly District seat in the San Fernando Valley, announced her endorsement by West Hollywood Councilman John D’Amico. One of her rivals, attorney Andrew Lachman, scored backing from state Sen. Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach). California Democratic Party Secretary Reginald Jones-Sawyer won support from Los Angeles Councilman Paul Koretz. Jones-Sawyer is one of several competitors for the seat in the newly drawn 59th Assembly District, which runs west from Huntington Park through parts of South Los Angeles.
Former Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson, who is seeking to return to the Legislature via the newly drawn 19th state Senate District, touted support from two prominent elected officials in Ventura County: county Supervisor Kathy Long and Ventura Mayor Bill Fulton.
And Pasadena Councilman Chris Holden, seeking the open 41st Assembly District seat, claimed support from a slew of Democratic officials, including state Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris; state Sens. Curren Price and Roderick Wright, both of Inglewood; and Assemblymen Steven Bradford of Gardena, Gil Cedillo and Mike Davis of Los Angeles, Mike Eng of Monterey Park and Isadore Hall of Compton.
