Jerry Brown to attend CSU trustees, UC Regents meetings

Gov. Jerry Brown’s campus tour continues this week with the governor planning to attend the meetings of the Cal State University Board of Trustees on Tuesday in Long Beach and the UC Board of Regents in San Francisco on Wednesday.

Proposition 30, approved by California voters last week, will prevent $500 million in cuts to the Cal State and University of California systems this year, and the governor had often said the measure’s passage would prevent tuition hikes in the near future.

The governor is a member of both boards but often sends a proxy rather than attending the meetings himself.
Fee hikes are certain to be on the agenda this week. The CSU system has already adopted plans to impose new fees on students who do not graduate within four years or are taking more classes than they need. Brown has yet to weigh in on those proposed fee increases.

CSU officials say the proposed fee hikes would allow them to admit about 18,000 additional students. When asked if the governor would address the proposed fee hikes this week, his spokesman Gil Duran said, ‘It’s a chance to check in and discuss education after the passage of Proposition 30.’
