Fab Faux to play Beatles’ ‘White Album’ Saturday at Orpheum

Here’s more proof that a Beatles tribute band circa 2011 no longer can get away with simply taking four musicians who look and sound like John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr and let them meticulously recreate their studio recordings in the live arena using historically accurate
instruments, equipment, hairstyles and wardrobe.
Tributes to the Fab Four have become so common that the most earnest practitioners continue to up the ante with conceptually ambitious stage productions. The Southern California-based Fab Four has played various Beatles albums from beginning to end, sometimes using accompaniment from full orchestras to replicate what the foursome and producer George Martin created in the studio.
This weekend, New York City’s Fab Faux will take on the group’s most expansive creation, 1968’s “The Beatles” double album, a.k.a. “The White Album,” with a start-to-finish performance Saturday at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The show anticipates next month’s 43rd anniversary of the original release date for the ‘White Album,’ the top-selling individual title among the Beatles’ original studio albums.
The Fab Faux, which focuses on the Beatles’ music rather than its iconic stage outfits, includes former “Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” guitarist-bandleader Jimmy Vivino, and bassist Will Lee, a member of the “Late Show With David Letterman” show band. “All rock bands want to be like the Beatles,” rock critic Dave Marsh once wrote of the Fab Faux. “These guys have the nerve to BE the Beatles. Amazingly, they’re so good at it you learn new things about the originals.’
