Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cameron, one of the halves of a gay couple that has adopted a baby girl on “Modern Family,” was planning to go to Las Vegas this weekend anyway.
But now that he’s been nominated for the role, he has specific instructions for his friends. “I did tell them that they had to call me ‘nominee’ everywhere we go. ‘Nominee, where do you want to go for breakfast?’ ‘Nominee, would you like me to shine your shoes?’ ”
As ecstatic as he is for his recognition, Stonestreet called the day “bittersweet” because of the Ed O’Neill snub. The rest of the adult members of the cast -- Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sofia Vergara -- were nominated.
O’Neill “is the leader in our show,” he said. “No one deserved recognition more than he does. But all these nominations really make us feel that people have embraced Cameron and Mitchell as a couple. And the same for Julie and Ty. It means people have completely bought into that relationship as a functioning unit.”
Stonestreet’s favorite scene to film was one in which Cameron and Mitchell locked their baby in a car.
“And I charge across the parking lot screaming,” he said. “That was a challenge. That’s a moment where I thought, ‘How do I make this real and believable without being over-the-top?’ Plus, it’s always awesome to run across the parking lot and fall down. It’s like getting to play guns.”
