Yes, Virginia, there is some Dodgers-related World Series memorabilia for sale online. Granted, it’s not from the 2008 World Series, which begins next week and will involve a team other than the Chavez Raviners.

What’s available online celebrates past Dodgers successes, including the 1988 World Series that the Dodgers won by disposing of the favored Athletics in five games. Not surprisingly, some of what’s being offered is tied to that Series’ signature moment, the pinch-hit, walk-off home run that an injured Kirk Gibson produced by dispatching a ball thrown by Athletics closer Dennis Eckersley in Game 1.

So what’s that kind of fame worth?

Steiner Sports Marketing has a good bit of Gibson memorabilia for sale, including a $299 autographed photo of Gibson, with arms raised high. But wait, there’s more. The photo frame incorporates ‘two MLB authenticated capsules of Dodger Stadium dirt.’

The Dodgers’ 2008 postseason sojourn isn’t likely to jumpstart collectors’ interest in Dodger Blue collectibles from happier days. It would be different, of course, had the Dodgers advanced to -- and won -- the World Series.

When that happens, interest in Dodgers collectibles -- whether game-worn uniforms, home-run balls or the historic stuff of past seasons -- ‘will be fantastic,’ said Brandon Steiner, founder of the eponymous collectibles company, during a Wednesday telephone interview. ‘You’ll see Dodger mania. It would be off the charts since they haven’t been there in such a long time.’
