Victor Ortiz, the young boxer from Oxnard, is on the undercard for the Dec. 6 match between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. Today it was announced that Ortiz will be fighting Jeffrey Resto.

In September, Times columnist Bill Dwyre covered the bout between Juan Manuel Marquez and Joel Casamayor and said this of Ortiz:

In the best fight of the night, until Marquez unleashed two roundhouses in the 11th round of the main event, Oxnard’s Victor Ortiz, only 21, won his first pro title, sent his record to 22-1-1 and looked the vastly superior fighter against the champion, Roberto Arrieta of Argentina.’He was talking to me during the fight,’ Ortiz said. ‘He told me I was too young to be the champion. During that round, I dropped him and said, ‘Now I’m world champion.’ ‘

Early this month, Lance Pugmire visited with Ortiz, who had been training with De La Hoya. But on that particular day, Ortiz explained why he was heading back to Oxnard to train. Here is a video of that interview.
