Despite having center Jayne Appel on the bench for much of the first half because of foul trouble, second-ranked Stanford leads USC, 33-24, at halftime of the Pacific 10 Conference women’s basketball tournament championship game at the Galen Center.

Stanford led by 15 points with less than six minutes left in the half, but USC rallied to trim the deficit to 29-24 on a three-point basket by Heather Oliver.

Stanford, however, came back with baskets from Jillian Harmon and Jeanette Pohlen to take the nine-point lead at the break.

Stanford has held Trojans point guard Camille LeNoir scoreless and prevented Brynn Cameron from launching the three-point shots that helped USC beat Arizona State and California.
