INDIANAPOLIS -- It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here, as snow began falling overnight, leaving the city coated in a white blanket by dawn.

Both the Dodgers and Angels hope that’s a good sign and that Santa will bring them some pitching during the baseball winter meetings, which opened its four-day run at the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown today.

The Dodgers return just three starters in left-hander Clayton Kershaw and right-handers Chad Billingsley and Hiroki Kuroda. And with all three having spent time on the disabled list last season, General Manager Ned Colletti may be wary about placing all his team’s hopes on that threesome.

The Dodgers may also make some moves in the bullpen; an Internet report says they are shopping left-hander George Sherrill.

The Angels, who will have some money to spend if the Mariners sign free-agent third baseman Chone Figgins, could invest those dollars in another free agent, right-hander John Lackey. The club also reportedly is interested in trading for Toronto’s Roy Halladay, although that will likely cost it one of its current starters.

Among the teams expected to be active in Indianapolis are the Yankees, who say they will cut their $201 million payroll, the Detroit Tigers, Mariners and Blue Jays, who are receiving lots of interest for Halladay.
