The Texas Rangers are on the verge of unloading starter Kevin Millwood and his $12-million contract, having reached agreement with the Baltimore Orioles on a trade that will send reliever Chris Ray to Texas. The Orioles will also help pay some of the final year of Millwood’s contract.

The deal will not be made official until both teams finish reviewing the pitchers’ medical records. Millwood, who turns 35 on Christmas Eve, was 13-10 with a 3.67 ERA in 31 starts for the Rangers last season. He had right shoulder surgery in 2001.

Ray, 27, missed all of 2008 after undergoing ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow and went 0-4 with a 7.27 ERA in 46 games last season.
