Final: Avalanche 4, Kings 3 in a shootout

The Kings earned a point Wednesday but couldn’t get two, as Ryan Smyth’s shootout attempt hit the crossbar and caromed out to give the Avalanche a 4-3 victory at the Pepsi Center and a split of a home-and-home series that began Monday.

The Kings pulled even with a power-play goal early in the third period and a power-play goal late in the third period.

Drew Doughty’s long wrist shot eluded a screened Craig Anderson 40 seconds into the final period during an advantage that had carried over from the second period. And Alexander Frolov was credited with the tying goal after a shot by Jarret Stoll from just inside the blue line was deflected in the slot with 1:21 left in regulation time.

Erik Ersberg stopped 14 shots in regulation and overtime in relief of starting goalie Jonathan Quick, who was pulled after Colorado scored its third goal, at 18:08 of the opening period.
