Roger Federer loses, Francesca Schiavone pulls an upset in French Open quarterfinals

Defending champion Roger Federer lost to fifth-seeded Robin Soderling, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, in Tuesday’s French Open quarterfinals, putting an end to Federer’s streak of reaching the semifinals in 23 consecutive major events.
It was the second French Open stunner in as many years for Soderling, who ended the reign of four-time champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round last year. Federer beat Soderling in the 2009 final to complete his career grand slam and was 12-0 against him entering Tuesday’s match.
No. 17-seeded Francesca Schiavone became the first Italian woman to reach the semifinal round of the French Open by upsetting third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, 6-2, 6-3, on Tuesday.
Playing in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the first time since 2001, Schiavone, 29, became the first Italian woman to advance to the semifinals at any Grand Slam tournament in the Open era, which began in 1968.
Schiavone will face fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva, who rallied past fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.
