Wimbledon: Hanescu fined for spitting and quitting

Romania’s Victor Hanescu, the 31st seed at Wimbledon who lost to Germany’s Daniel Brands 6-7 (7), 6-7 (3), 7-6 (7), 6-3, 3-0, ret., was fined $7,500 by Wimbledon on Saturday for unsportsmanlike conduct and another $7,500 for not using his best efforts.

On Friday night, Hanescu asked for his match to be suspended during the fifth set as it became darker out. His request was refused and soon Hanescu seemed to quit contesting points. Some in the crowd on Court 18 began heckling Hanescu who clearly spit toward the stands. Shortly after he quit. The chair umpire refused to shake Hanescu’s hand. Officially, Hanescu was said to have stopped because of a leg injury.

Hanescu has the right to appeal the fines within 10 days.
