The top-seeded women’s doubles team of Venus and Serena Williams were upset Wednesday by the unseeded team of Elena Vesnina and Vera Zvonareva of Russia, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Serena Williams who, along with Zvonareva, will play in Thursday’s women’s singles semifinals, played with a black taping on her serving shoulder.
The last time the Williams sisters didn’t win a Grand Slam doubles tournament they entered was the 2009 French Open.
Serena will meet unseeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in one Thursday semifinal. The 21st-seeded Zvonareva will play Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the other.
