UCLA Football: Jim Mastro hired as Bruins’ assistant

Nevada assistant football coach Jim Mastro was hired by UCLA on Thursday.

Mastro, who spent the past the last 11 seasons as a Wolf Pack assistant, agreed to a three-year deal believed to be worth more than $300,000, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who was not authorized to speak on the subject. The third year of the contract becomes guaranteed if he remains on staff the first two seasons.

Mastro, 45, will coach the tight ends and F-backs, but will also coordinate the run game. He was deeply involved with Nevada’s “pistol” offense, which UCLA adopted last season. The Bruins are expected to keep at least portions of the offense next season. Mastro also served as the Wolf Pack’s recruiting coordinator since 2004. Wayne Moses will remain the Bruins’ running back coach.

The hiring leaves only the defensive coordinator position to fill unless others on the staff are fired or leave. Kentucky assistant coach Steve Brown was interviewed for the defensive coordinator position on Tuesday.
