Phil Mickelson had a tough day Thursday, his three-over 74 leaving him pondering the cut as much as a run for the title.
But after giving it some thought, he reflected on his first 18 holes as follows: “This actually turned out to be a great day because I played horrific. I started out hitting a good shot into the water to make double. And to hit it where I did today and to walk away only three over, I’m still in it where if I get this thing turned around, shoot a good round tomorrow, I’ll be right back in it. This could have easily been a day in the 80s.”
Masterful spin.
And perhaps he convinced himself.
He went three-under 33 on the front Friday morning.
