Frank Gore’s latest injury may not be that big of a deal for the San Francisco 49ers. First of all, it doesn’t look to be that serious. Plus, the 49ers really didn’t need their most productive player of the first half of the season during a big victory over one of the top teams in the NFC on Sunday.
Gore, who rushed for 782 yards and five touchdowns on 159 attempts during the first eight games of the season, had six carries for a net gain of zero yards against the New York Giants before leaving the game with a knee injury late in the second quarter.
The two-time Pro Bowler actually started jogging onto the field to start the second half but was called back by running backs coach Tom Rathman.
After the game, Gore said his injury wasn’t serious and Coach Jim Harbaugh was confident Gore would be able to take part in next week’s game against Arizona.
‘I felt like I could have played,’ Gore said.
It wasn’t necessary. Running back Kendall Hunter ran for a 27-yard touchdown and quarterback Alex Smith completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Vernon Davis (as well as a two-point conversion to Michael Crabtree) in the fourth quarter for a 27-20 victory.
The 49ers improved to 8-1, the second-best record in both the NFC and NFL. “This is big. I’m happy I’m a part of it,” Gore said. “I hope we keep it going.”
