Apple is replacing the bottom cases of some recently sold MacBooks for free after reports of the rubber surface separating from the underside of the computer.

The problem has shown up on some laptops shipped between October 2009 and last month.

Apple is offering three fixes. Users can bring the computer to experts at the Genius Bars located in retail stores or they can work with an authorized service provider for a new case.

Otherwise, handy owners can go online to order a replacement kit, which includes the bottom case along with a screwdriver, screws and instructions.

For customers who have already paid for a substitute case, Apple said it will give out refunds.
