Already as good as last year

It was good to see Magnolia win its opener on Friday over Calavary Chapel, 25-0, not because I have anything against Calvary Chapel, but because the Sentinels need all the good news they can get. It is also good to see first-year Coach Dave Perkins take over the program. Perkins did a good job at Estancia and Costa Mesa -- going from one rival to the other -- but his final season I think was clouded by the death of one of his players, Matt Colby.

This might be a good match. Perkins is the third coach in three years, and there should be good potential for Magnolia if they can find a coach who can provide the consistency necessary to develop the program and the athletes.

Magnolia was 1-9 last season, its worst record since 2002 when it also won only one game. Over the last six seasons, Magnolia is 15-44. Its best season in that span was 2004 when it was 4-6 under coach Robert Frasco.
