Exciting times at Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon. Someone besides Chris Pesaniello is running with the football this season. Pesaniello, you remember, is the human battering ram that set a national record with 503 carries last season.

Luckily, the Titans return one player who has cradled the pigskin before. Small but speedy quarterback Jonathan Warzeka rushed for nearly 1,600 yards and scored 19 touchdowns last season. He helped Temescal Canyon open the season last week with a 38-15 victory over Diamond Bar, rushing for 103 yards and throwing for 108.

Temescal Canyon, which advanced to the Inland Division semifinals last season, will face a slightly stiffer test Friday against visiting Riverside Arlington at 7 p.m.

The Lions are coming off their own successful season, finishing 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the Ivy League, but they’re also looking to replace their main ball-carrier. Keep an eye on 6-foot-4, 315-pound sophomore nose guard Calvin Tonga. If he gets his paws on the 5-9, 170-pound Warzeka, it could be a long night for Temescal Canyon.
