Getting ready for a nice, short drive over to Glover Stadium in Anaheim to watch Corona Santiago vs. Anaheim Servite, which is ranked No. 9 in our latest poll. By the way, thanks to all the upsets last night, you might as well wad up those rankings and bank ‘em in the trash can.

This story, written before the game a year ago, illustrates the passion with which the Sharks approached the highly anticipated matchup. Santiago then upset the higer-ranked Friars, 23-9, but also left a lot on the field that night, losing six of their next eight.

And then there’s the lingering hut drill controversy. Servite seems to think everybody wants to watch their quarter turns and chicken scratches, and Santiago Coach Steve Mitchell wasn’t happy the way his team was elbowed out of the way to make room last year ... especially on his own turf.

As I wrote in an earlier post, the big matchup will be Servite’s offense against Santiago’s defense. Servite features two USC-bound players, all-purpose back D.J. Shoemate and offensive lineman Matt Kalil, while the Sharks’ defense is anchored by UCLA-bound defensive back Anthony Dye. You’ll also see a lot of these athletes on the opposite side of the ball.

Santiago displayed a solid defensive effort in its 20-8 season-opening victory over Murrieta Valley last week, but I think Servite will squeak by this time, 14-13.
