Bret Saberhagen, who resigned as baseball coach at Calabasas Monday after three years as coach, said Tuesday that continuing problems with homeowners over use of the school baseball diamond he helped build was one of the reasons he decided to give up his position.

‘It’s the same old stuff,’ said Saberhagen, a two-time Cy Young Award winner who briefly resigned in 2005 over similar issues. ‘Nothing has ever changed.’

The field is built near houses, and Saberhagen said homeowners have been dictating how loud music could be played and when batting practice could take place.

‘I’m not happy anymore,’ he said. ‘I can’t do what I love doing -- coaching the kids.’

Saberhagen left open the possibility of returning as an assistant coach.

‘I need to get away for a while to see if I’m interested and if they’re interested in having me in that capacity,’ he said.

Ed Edsall, who coached the freshman-sophomore team, is expected to replace Saberhagen.
