South Hills follows St. Francis’ defensive game plan

Before the game I asked South Hills Coach Steve Bogan how many times he watched the Los Altos-St. Francis game film.
‘A lot,’ he said.
The great thing St. Francis did against Los Altos, I told him, was to cut the edges -- the Friars did not allow Bryce Mahmud-McBride to get to the outside.
‘Well, did we cut the edges?’ Bogan jokingly asked after South Hills’ 35-21 victory over Los Altos.
You took away the outside and the inside as much as you could, I said. You just didn’t take away the pass.
‘Kids played a great game. I think we did a good job of containing him [Mahmud-McBride], but that just shows you what a warrior program that is,’ Bogan said.
After jumping to a 14-0 lead and then taking a 28-7 lead, Los Altos made it interesting at the end but couldn’t complete the comeback.
‘We were trying to make sure if they beat us, they beat us with someone else,’ Bogan said of Mahmud-McBride
NM-M still had big runs and scored two touchdowns, but the rest of the Los Altos offense didn’t do enough. QB Junior Tamayo showed flashes of promise in the fourth and that could help the Conquerors in league play next week.
‘Everybody keys on him, he’s our weapon, we have to relief pressure on him with passes,’ Tamayo said of Mahmud-McBride.
Los Altos Coach Greg Gano said his team will work more on its passing game during the upcoming week.
‘We have to throw a little bit, we can’t give it to Bryce every play,’ he said. ‘We dropped the ball. If we are going to be a good team, we can’t do that.’
