Los Alamitos edges El Toro in boys’ water polo Masters final

Austin Trinkle scored three goals, all in the fourth quarter, and Los Alamitos rallied from a 7-5 deficit after three quarters to beat El Toro, 10-9, in the championship game of the Southern Section Masters tournament Saturday at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex in Irvine.

Los Alamitos and El Toro were Division I semifinalists in the recently completed Southern Section playoffs. To reach the Masters final, Los Alamitos beat Division IV champion Agoura, 8-7, and El Toro beat Villa Park, the Division II champion, 10-4, in the semifinals.

Newport Harbor, the Division I champion, beat La Canada, 10-9, in overtime in the fifth-place game on Saturday, while Northwood, which had lost to the Sailors in the section final, lost the seventh-place game to Corona del Mar, 10-5.

In the inaugural Masters tournament last year, Northwood beat El Toro after the Chargers had defeated the Timberwolves in the Division I final.
