The Temecula Valley wrestling team started the 2007-08 season doing what it does best -– winning dual meets.
The defending Southern Section Division I dual meet champion Golden Bears won five straight matches at last weekend’s Henderson (Nev.) Green Valley Duals before coming up just short against Yuma (Ariz.) Cibola, 32-30, in the finals. Cibola is a top-10 Division 5A team in Arizona, as reported on The Wrestling Mall.
Temecula Valley, which is the top-ranked team in the Division I coaches’ poll, is led by 171-pounder Jake Meredith, who took seventh in the state at the same weight last season, and 160-pounder Patrick Martinez, who was a USA wrestling standout in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling this summer. Coach Arnold Alpert’s team will next take part in the Reno (Nev.) Tournament of Champions, starting Dec. 19.
