In a South Bay battle, Mira Costa clipped high-riding El Segundo, 55-52, as Nate Easterman had 17 points for the Mustangs (4-2) and John Ryan scored 23 for Eagles (4-2).

Loyola -- ranked No. 16 in The Times’ preseason rankings -- lost again and lost to a then-sub .500 Santa Monica squad, 61-60. Jamen Fearon and Edward Willis each scored 20 points for Santa Monica, and Georgetown-bound Hollis Thompson racked up 20 for the perplexing Cubs.
