Morro Bay is making me look bad

Last week, I picked Morro Bay to win the Los Padres League title and it rewarded my confidence by losing to a ho-hum Santa Maria squad, 60-59, on Wednesday night. Nothing against the Saints, but this is the kind of game the Pirates should have won by double digits.

The biggest reason I picked the Pirates over Templeton for the league title was their big depth advantage. However, scoring monster Dylan Royer was the only one who showed up to play against Santa Maria. Royer (aka Mr. three-pointer) scored 29 points, but no one else scored more than 12. It was kind of like the Lakers, except Royer’s not a complainer.

Morro Bay also couldn’t stop a very balanced scoring attack led by Andrew Colorado‘s 16-point effort and the Saints’ 18 points from the charity stripe. Hmm ... that’s nothing like how things turned out when these two teams met in the Carpinteria tournament less than a month ago.

It’s my utmost wish Morro Bay gets back on track Friday when it travels to flower country to take on a struggling Lompoc team looking to post its own upset. I understand one loss isn’t going to make the Pirates’ title hopes walk the plank, but I just don’t want to be embarrassed -- again.

And one last thing: If you’re a hardcore Varsity Times Insider peruser, then you already know the scheduled contest between Morro Bay and Templeton was rained out last week. It has been rescheduled for Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
