South East boys’ soccer Coach Felipe Bernal said his team had to ‘play smart’ to beat Bell on Thursday.

So imagine Bernal’s horror when his visiting Jaguars gave Bell forward Carlos Velasquez a point-blank shot in front of the South East goal. And the senior forward did not miss, giving Bell a 1-0 lead.

But South East got an equalizer from Cesar Gonzalez midway through the first half of this Eastern League showdown.

If the score remains 1-1, it helps Bell more than South East for the league championship. While both began Thursday’s match with the same league record of 6-1-1, Bell won the first meeting between the teams.
