There were several wild finishes in the pool on Saturday but for sheer drama it’s hard to top the Division III girls’ water polo quarterfinal clash between Los Osos and Walnut.
Los Osos took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter but the fourth-seeded Mustangs chipped away, finally tying the score on a goal by Allison Zell with four seconds left in regulation. In the first overtime Walnut took the early lead only to see the Grizzlies tie it in the final minute.
The second overtime was back and forth until Los Osos scored to take a 9-8 lead with less than a minute left, and this time Walnut was unable to net the equalizer.
The Grizzlies’ reward for such a hardfought victory? A semifinal match against top-seeded Riverside Poly.
