Got a promise last week from Bob Becker, the coach of the Gahr boys’ basketball team. He told me the showdown between Gahr’s Casper Ware and Compton’s DeMar DeRozan would be unforgettable.

It was.

Ware did his thing -- slipping and spinning his way to 22 points.

And, of course, DeRozan did his -- soaring to 32 points. His final 12 were in the last eight minutes, and he slapped an exclamation point on the evening with house-rocking dunk with 26 seconds remaining.

Compton won, 94-86, and advances to the Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinals to meet Santa Margarita on Friday night. Expect another stellar showdown -- this time between DeRozan and Washington State-signee Klay Thompson. And that’s another promise.

All this talk about promises, now I have this clunker in my head...
