Don’t tell University the Invitational Division finals this Saturday are an afterthought to the Championship Division finals.

‘What [making the finals] has done is re-energized the school because both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have advanced,’ boys’ Coach Steve Ackerman said. ‘Our football team went to the Coliseum (for the Invitational championship game against Garfield). We’re riding a wave of success.’

The University boys’ (21-12), seeded second, will play Eagle Rock (14-6), seeded eighth, in the Sports Arena at 11 a.m. The University girls’ (16-12), seeded seventh, will play top seed El Camino Real (14-12) in the Sports Arena at 9 a.m.

‘Our kids could not be happier,’ Ackerman said. ‘We get to play in Sports Arena, and the games will be televised. This is our City championship. We know who we are, and we feel this validates the success of our seasons.’
