In girls’ basketball, it’s the itsy-bitsy things we never think about. Like bobby pins. Yes, that’s what I said -- bobby pins.

Bear with me...

Here I am, at the Pyramid in Long Beach, watching warmups before the Southern Section Division V-A championship game between Sierra Canyon and Crossroads. A referee points to a Sierra Canyon player’s hair: ‘Take it out. No bobby pins.’

The player removes it and says to the ref: ‘Great, now, my bangs keep falling in my eyes.’

The ref laughs. So do I.
