You should love thy neighbor. And barbecue with thy neighbor. And help thy neighbor with grocery bags.

At least that’s what Mr. Rogers would have advised.

But I doubt tomorrow two neighbors will be helping each other much at all. No, it’ll be an old-fashioned Hatfield-and-McCoy brouhaha when Mayfair and second-seeded Long Beach Wilson battle each other in the second round of the Southern California Regional Division I girls’ soccer playoffs.

See, I just checked a map and saw that Long Beach neighbors Lakewood, where Mayfair hails, to the west and south. And that’s one reason why tomorrow will be so much fun. The other reason is that these two squads are just superb with a combined 55 victories and three losses between them.

Wilson (28-1-4 and the Southern Section Division I co-champion) is fresh off a 1-0 victory over Westview and Mayfair (27-2-4 and the section’s Division III co-champion) just beat third-seeded Buchanan.
