Don’t know if Mel Sims drew it up this way or his guard, Ariel Marsh, simply dribbled too much time off the clock, but Ayala had the ball with 25.8 seconds left in the second overtime and 24 seconds on the shot clock.
She dribbled down to about seven seconds in the far court before starting the play, and Rebekah Gardner was forced to rush a three-point attempt at the buzzer. Should have just dribbled to the basket and forced a foul, which they could have done if they had the time.
Anyway, Gardner missed, and now it’s 64-64 heading into the third overtime period between Ayala and Mira Costa in the Southern California Regional Division II final at the Sports Arena.
