Mater Dei looks to short-circuit Edison in Division II final

Mater Dei probably thought it had plenty of time to warm up before its Southern California Regional Division II final against Fresno Edison, but then the Division II girls’ final between Mira Costa and Ayala went to triple overtime at the Sports Arena.
The Monarchs could’ve used the extra time to practice their layups, since they’ll likely be getting lots of those in this game. I see Edison does have a 6-foot-8, 220-pound junior forward in Greg Smith, a 6-7 sophomore in Steven McClellan and a 6-6 senior in Philip Ward, so the 6-10 Wear twins for Mater Dei, David and Travis, might actually have to jump for a rebound this afternoon.
The scoreboard here at the Sports Arena looks like a retro version from the 1960s. No quarters listed, no team fouls and the only letters I can make out on Mater Dei’s side is ‘ATER.’’ They’re actually using the video screen on the scoreboard to broadcast video of another game clock somewhere in the building.
Mater Dei should have just played in its gymnasium instead of leaving the keys for the Divisions IV and V teams. I’m pretty sure all the fans at this game could’ve fit comfortably in the Mater Dei gym, which has a real scoreboard with a live video feed of the game.
Anyway, getting close to tip-off here. Time for the Monarchs to see if they can join their Trinity League mates, Santa Margarita, in Sacramento next weekend for the state finals.
