Get ready for another showdown in the public vs. private school debate.

On Tuesday, members of the Tri-Counties Athletic Assn. held an email vote to decide if Oaks Christian will be permitted to remain as a member of the association.

According to Oak Park Co-Athletic Director Dick Billingsley, the vote is intended to show Oaks Christian whether or not it still has the association’s support. However, the vote does not have any official power in terms of forcing the sports programs at the Westlake Village-based school to play in a different league.

‘We want to make it clear to Oaks Christian how we feel,’ Billingsley said. ‘And hopefully, they’ll look at it and go from there.’

Billingsley told me he wouldn’t know the results of the vote until Wednesday morning.

The idea is that if the TCAA votes in favor of ousting Oaks Christian from the association, the school will pursue other league options. The Mission League (Serra for football) is one possible option since an unfavorable TCAA vote would make it difficult for Oaks Christian to be accepted in the Channel or Marmonte leagues.

Oaks Christian has one of the most dominant sports programs in Southern California and that reputation has placed it directly in the middle of the on-going debate between private and public schools. Its football team, which has won five consecutive divisional titles, has drawn the most ire from critics and its success may be the primary reason for the vote.
