Oh, so those are the little things Palisades Coach Mike Voelkel was talking about Tuesday. Sacrifice bunts, squeeze bunts and aggressive base-running keyed the decisive three-run fifth inning that led the Dolphins past visiting Marshall, 4-1.

‘Yeah, we even tried a squeeze from second base and that wasn’t successful,’ Voelkel said. ‘That’s going to happen; hopefully, we’ll iron those things out.’

Even more impressive were the strong six-plus innings by starter Marlon Zamboni (1-1), who gave up one run on six hits, and lights out relief by Jonathan Moscot, who got the final two outs by freezing the Marshall batters on third-strike curveballs.

Moscot, who started the game at third base and had an RBI single in the third, would be a great luxury for Voelkel if he could use the hard-throwing junior exclusively in relief. But Moscot will have to pitch more than that if Palisades is going to have a good season.

‘He’s definitely one of our starters,’ Voelkel said. ‘But he will come in, in a closing role, as long as he has days off in between. And I’m not looking to use him more than an inning. If the game is life and death, maybe two.’
