While watching a Northern League opener between Eagle Rock and Marshall on Monday, won by the host Barristers, 7-1, a Marshall coach watching the game mentioned there were still some strong feelings between the schools ever since Eagle Rock beat Marshall in the 2005 City Invitational football championship game.

‘We still talk about it today,’ the coach said. ‘And it permeates through every sport, including baseball.’

I initially thought that might be a bit much. But after talking with baseball Coach Shane Gerard after the game, that notion did not seem far-fetched.

Gerard had praised his outfield’s defense, which featured diving catches by right fielder Danny Galvez and left fielder Christian Hernandez. Galvez also threw out an Eagle runner at the plate. Then Gerard discussed the importance of the win.

‘We wanted to establish who they were dealing with here, coming to our yard,’ Gerard said. ‘We would have liked to have gone up [big] early in the game. We let them hang around a little too long.’

The Eagles get a return game on Thursday at Eagle Rock. I wouldn’t exactly call it DEFCON 5, but there may be an increase in intensity.
