I felt Campbell Hall’s Jenson Turner was one of the hottest players coming into the CIF Boys’ Singles event and so far the Vikings’ Pepperdine-bound senior is proving me right.

Turner, pictured, won each of his first two matches in straight sets Thursday and if he can beat San Luis Obispo’s Julian Arnold early Friday morning, he’ll likely meet one of the tournament favorites, Corona del Mar’s Oscar Fabian Matthews, in the quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m.

No one has looked more impressive so far than Crossroads’ Reese Milner, who didn’t drop a game in his first two matches. Milner could meet Santa Barbara’s Daniel Nguyen in the quarterfinals if he first takes care of Diamond Bar’s Victor Chien and Nguyen eliminates Oxnard’s Sasha Hedberg.

Two City Section players are still alive in the bottom half of the draw -- Ken Mkrtchian of Sherman Oaks CES and Carson’s Florante Sarmiento, who takes on Easter Bowl doubles winner Kyle McMorrow in the round of 16 Friday morning.

Brentwood junior Walker Kehrer figures to have a good chance of reaching the semifinals if he can survive Friday morning’s match against Daniel Ho of Beverly Hills -- a clash between players from the top two ranked teams in Division III.
