Baseball: Georgia battery under investigation after nailing umpire

Check out this video and decide for yourself if the pitcher and catcher conspired to hit an umpire in his face mask. If true, the catcher sold the play horribly, and the pitcher has spot-on accuracy but apparently not much of a fastball.
The school was fined, a college banned the catcher from playing there next year and the ump has retained a lawyer.
Given the risks of umpiring and the implied expectation of getting hit in the mask, I’m not sure what the lawyer is for. I suppose there might be a battery charge (the most brilliant pun of all time, by the way) but that would seem excessive given the circumstances.
