Fill up the car with gas, because there are lots of weekend high school sports events.
I’m headed for the first major summer passing competition of the season. It’s Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., at Dana Hills, where Mater Dei, Long Beach Poly, Edison and Los Alamitos are among the schools competing in a seven-on-seven football tournament.
At Loyola Marymount, adidas is holding a seven-on-seven competition that takes place Saturday and Sunday. Encino Crespi, which won the Pierce tournament last week, is favored to triumph under quarterback Bryan Bennett and earn a trip to the national championship in Atlanta. Upland, led by quarterback Josh Nunes, is also scheduled to play.
On Sunday at Birmingham, the Valley Youth Conference East-West all-star football game is set for 3:30 p.m., with UCLA-bound Milton Knox expected to play.
In high school boys’ basketball, the Watts Summer Games semifinals are Saturday at Fairfax, with the Lions playing Lynwood at 11 a.m. and Van Nuys facing Pasadena at noon.
In baseball, Cal Lutheran is the site for a Saturday afternoon futures game bringing together lots of sophomores and juniors from Ventura County and the West San Fernando Valley. That’s where lots of college coaches will be.
And if you want real entertainment, there’s Friday night boxing at Pierce College involving 16 high school bouts. It’s run by Crespi’s boxing club.
