For hoops fans out in the Valley who were hoping to catch a glimpse of David and Travis Wear on Thursday night, you can forget about it. The North Carolina-bound brothers will not be traveling with Mater Dei for its showdown against Campbell Hall.

The senior tandem isn’t even in the country. Both are abroad, in Argentina, representing USA Basketball as members of the under-18 national team. The Monarchs do, however, have another prized prospect waiting in the wings. Don’t they always?

Perhaps you’ve heard of the kid, his name is Andy Brown. In fact, if the Wear twins didn’t attend Mater Dei, Brown would most likely be considered one of the main attractions during the Mid-Summer Classic tournament hosted by the Vikings.

‘Plenty of college scouts keep tabs on him,’’ Monarchs Coach Gary McKnight said about Brown, who has offers from Pac-10 Conference programs such as Arizona, Stanford and USC. Other schools recently expressing interest in the talented 6-foot-8 senior forward include Indiana, Michigan and Utah.

‘He’s a tremendous athlete, a tremendous kid, a good representation of what Mater Dei basketball is all about,’’ McKnight added. ‘We’d like to keep him around here for another four years, but we can’t, his future is too bright to hold him back any longer. He’s going to make an impact right away at the next level.’’
