Football: Long Beach Poly opens with victory

Long Beach Poly traveled to Miami for its season opener Saturday night and came away with a 29-7 victory over Miami Northwestern, the two-time defending state 6A champion. The victory ended the Bulls’ 30-game win streak.

As expected, Poly showed off a powerful rushing attack. Melvin Richardson gained 124 yards in 16 carries and scored two touchdowns. Daveon Barner added 96 yards in 18 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Defensive end Luta Tepa had two sacks.
