One year ago, Birmingham of the City Section stunned Southern Section power Long Beach Poly, 20-7. Now it’s another City team, Carson, that is pulling off the surprise. The Colts have opened a 34-20 lead over Mater Dei after quarterback Daniel Torres ran five yards for a touchdown with six minutes left in the third quarter.

Kevin Lane’s interception -- the second of the game against All-American quarterback Matt Barkley -- put Carson in position. He returned the ball 43 yards to the Mater Dei 5.

Forget about Birmingham being the preseason favorite to win the City title. Put the Colts to the front if they win this one and even if they don’t, based on the talent they’re showing off.
