When Servite marches onto Crespi‘s faux field tonight, it’ll mark the first real chapter in the Friars’ quest to play in a state bowl game this December.

I don’t mean to take away from Servite’s season-opening victories over St. Paul and Fresno Clovis West, but come on -- everybody knew the Friars would take those contests. Crespi represents their first uber-challenge, kicking off a hellfire round of games that will cap off the toughest schedule in the state.

Does that mean tonight’s game is a must-win if Servite wants to be a bowl game contender?

No -- especially if it can take the Pac-5 Division title. However, a victory tonight would exorcise the memories of last year’s playoff loss to the Celts, proving that the Friars are a contender for bigger and better things.
