City Section approves new playoff format for basketball

The boys’ and girls’ basketball playoffs in the City Section will have four divisions for the playoffs to help add teams for the state playoffs. The Interscholastic Athletic Committee gave final approval today.

There will be Divisions I, II and III, plus a small schools division. The Division I finals will be held at the Galen Center, with the others taking place at Los Angeles Roybal.

Teams were ranked from 1 to 61 based on past playoff success. The top 12 teams in the section were placed in Division I, the next 12 in Division II and the next 12 in Division III. Others were added. There will be 16-team brackets.

Division I boys: Arleta, Banning, Bernstein, Birmingham, Canoga Park, Carson, Cleveland, Crenshaw, Dorsey, Fairfax, Fremont, Garfield, Hollywood, Jefferson, Jordan, Lincoln, Marshall, Monroe, Palisades, Panorama, South Gate, Sylmar, Taft, Washington, Westchester.

Division II boys: Bell, Bravo, Contreras, Chatsworth, Gardena, Granada Hills, Grant, King Drew, Kennedy, Narbonne, Poly, Reseda, San Pedro, South East, University, Van Nuys, Venice, Wilson.

Division III boys: Belmont, Eagle Rock, East Valley, El Camino Real, Franklin, Hamilton, Huntington Park, Locke, Los Angeles, Manual Arts, Maywood, North Hollywood, Roosevelt, Roybal, San Fernando, Santee, Verdugo Hills, West Adams.

Division I girls: Bell, Belmont, Bernstein, Canoga Park, Carson, Chatsworth, Cleveland, Crenshaw, Dorsey, Franklin, Fremont, Gardena, Hamilton, Jefferson, Jordan, Kennedy, Manual Arts, Palisades, San Pedro, Taft, Venice, Washington, Westchester, Wilson.
