Inglewood had a 17-point lead over Torrance late in the third quarter on Saturday, and Coach Anthony Scott said he felt comfortable and subbed out some of his starters.
Big mistake.
Torrance opened the fourth quarter with a 13-2 run and slashed Inglewood’s lead to six points with four minutes remaining in the game.
Scott put his starters back in, and Inglewood held on to claim a 58-52 win in the second round of the Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs.
‘We pulled the game off behind Hazel Ramirez’s leadership and Deajanae Scurry’s four points in the fourth,’ Scott said.
Scurry led the Sentinels with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Inglewood (24-5) will face Jurupa Valley (19-9) on Wednesday in a quarterfinal game.
‘I’m not too sure what to expect from Jurupa Valley,’ Scott said. ‘They weren’t expected to beat Arroyo Grande.’
He is using that to motivate his team.
‘I keep telling my players this is a one-game tournament; you lose one and you’re done,’ Scott said. ‘Look at Arroyo Grande.’
Second-seeded Inglewood lost in the Division 3A championship game to Foothill last season and is looking to win it all this time around.
