We are counting down to kickoff for tonight’s CIF Southern Section Western Division final between West Hills Chaminade and host Gardena, which starts at 8 p.m. and could go right down to the wire.
The teams met in their Mission League opener earlier in the season and Chaminade rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half to prevail 28-20 on its way to taking the league title.
Chaminade is seeking its first section title in the school’s 60-year history. The Eagles (12-1) are led by junior quarterback Brad Kaaya, who has thrown for 1,762 yards and 11 touchdowns without an interception since earning the starting job in a victory over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. Terrell Newby has rushed for 2,129 yards and 43 touchdowns and is averaging 7.8 yards per carry.
Serra upset Lompoc 34-21 in the semifinals last week, snapping Lompoc’s 32-game winning streak. The Cavaliers (11-2) are led by junior quarterback Jalen Greene, who has passed for 2.158 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, and receivers Anterio Bateman and Darrell Fuery, who have 31 receptions apiece. Serra is after its third section title in four years.
