Palm Springs Shaken by Mild Earthquake
An earthquake shook the Palm Springs area where President Reagan was spending the New Year’s holiday night, but there were no reports of injury or damage-and nothing to indicate that the chief executive noticed it.
The Caltech seismological laboratory said the quake, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, occurred at 9:24 p.m. and was centered about 12 miles north of Palm Springs.
Police dispatchers said they barely noticed the temblor, although several Palm Springs residents telephoned to report it.
The President was staying at the golf course estate of millionaire publisher Walter Annenberg.
